Port Your Number First Then Cancel Your SA Cellphone Contract
13 August 2026
The safest way to keep your cellphone number when you switch networks is simple: port first, cancel later. If you do it the other way round, you can lose the number that your bank, family, and half your accounts still recognise. The transfer itself is technical. The real danger is administrative, so people who rush the cancellation often end up trying to rebuild a number they can no longer reclaim. ICASA says a successful port can take up to seven working days, while the major networks commonly process mobile ports much faster. ICASA numbering ICASA porting specs
Before you start, have three things in hand. You need an active number on the old network, a new SIM that has already been RICA registered, and the same identity details on both sides of the switch. If the ID number or name on the donor network does not line up with the new SIM’s RICA record, the port can stall or fail. You also need to keep the old SIM available long enough to reply to the confirmation SMS. ICASA’s anti-fraud guidance also warns that unexpected signal loss can be a sign of illegal porting or a SIM swap. If your line dies without warning, check it immediately and call your bank if needed. ICASA cybersecurity ICASA festive warning
How the port works
The process starts on the network you are moving to, not the one you are leaving. You buy or receive the new SIM, RICA it, and then send the port request from your existing number using the target network’s porting SMS, USSD, app, or store process. MTN’s prepaid SMS route, for example, uses PORTME# plus the kit number sent to 083 767 8287, and it tells you not to insert the new SIM too early. Vodacom’s prepaid route uses portme plus the new SIM number to 082 767 8287, while Cell C offers SMS, WhatsApp, and online switch flows. Rain says you can keep your active number and begin the port journey from the LoopPhone app. MTN SMS porting Vodacom switch help Cell C keep your number rain FAQs
Once the request goes through, the new network confirms it, and the old network sends a message to the current SIM for approval. This approval step is not decoration. If you do not respond in time, the request dies and you start again. MTN’s published flow shows three confirmation messages before the switch completes, and Cell C says to expect an SMS from your current provider and to answer with the OTP or link it sends. Vodacom says port requests are handled on weekdays between 19:30 and 23:30, excluding public holidays, and can be scheduled for the same day or a date up to 30 days later. Cell C says its switch is usually completed within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the request time. MTN combo terms Cell C keep your number Vodacom switch help
The RICA part
RICA is the gatekeeper. The new SIM has to be RICA registered before the port can proceed, and the documents are the ordinary ones: a valid South African ID or passport, plus proof of address not older than three months. rain’s legal terms say the same thing, as does its number portability section, which also notes that number transfer can lead to loss of stored messages, credit, and unused allowances on the donor network. Cell C’s switch page and MTN’s porting terms both require in-store or approved RICA for the new SIM before the transfer starts. rain RICA terms rain number portability terms Cell C keep your number MTN SMS porting
If the details do not match, the system has no reason to trust the request. This is the boring but decisive answer to a lot of “my port is stuck” complaints. The donor network needs to recognise that the person asking for the transfer is the same person who owns the active number. If your old SIM was registered under a different name, an old ID number, or a half-finished RICA profile from years ago, fix that first or expect delays.
Prepaid and contract numbers do not behave the same way
The technical port is similar whether you are prepaid or on contract, but the paperwork after the port is very different. On prepaid, the main issue is what gets left behind. Any unused airtime, data, or bundle value on the old network is generally lost when the number moves. Cell C says remaining data and voice bundles will no longer be available after the transfer. rain says unused credit and allowances may be lost when a number is ported away. On contract, the port does not magically erase the agreement you signed. MTN says post-paid users may have to pay early termination penalties, and the contract can still carry obligations after the number has left. rain says you may remain liable under the donor contract even after porting. Vodacom also says it will check whether your current provider allows the number to be ported before the switch goes ahead. If you still owe handset instalments, have notice periods left, or are tied to a minimum term, those bills do not vanish just because the SIM moved. The sequence matters. Porting moves the number. Cancelling ends the contract. Those are separate events, and your old provider will happily keep billing you if you treat them as the same thing.
What can go wrong
The usual failures are not mysterious.
A port can fail because the number is inactive, because the old account is in arrears, because the RICA details do not match, or because the SMS was sent in the wrong format. ICASA’s porting rules also allow the donor and recipient operators to handle the transaction through the approved ordering system. The process is formal enough that guessing your way through it is a bad plan. A number that has already been deactivated is especially risky. Once it falls out of active use and back into the network’s pool, you may never get it back. ICASA numbering ICASA porting specs
There is also the quiet problem of timing. Some networks and product sets make you wait before you can move again. rain’s terms say you can only port away from rain after one calendar month from the requested port date to rain. That is not the rule most people remember when they are excited about a cheaper deal, but it is the kind of clause that lands hard when you try to move twice in quick succession. rain number portability terms
The other common failure is human. People confirm the request on the wrong SIM, ignore the message, or cancel the old account because they think the new one is already live. That is how number loss happens. The port only works while the donor number is still active and reachable.
What each network expects
MTN’s published prepaid flow is one of the clearest examples of the standard process. Buy and RICA the new SIM, keep the old SIM in the handset, send the port message from the existing number, wait for confirmation, then move the new SIM into the phone after the old one is discounted. MTN also says post-paid users must go in store to apply. MTN SMS porting MTN combo terms
Vodacom offers both in-store and SMS paths. Its help page says prepaid users can port with a RICA-registered SIM by sending portme plus the Vodacom SIM number to 082 767 8287. It notes that the process can be booked for a same-day switch or scheduled up to 30 days out. For contract switches, Vodacom says you will go through credit checks and approval before the contract is signed. Vodacom switch help
Cell C gives you more than one route. You can switch by WhatsApp on 084 444 0040, by SMS to 084 767 8287, or online. Its page also says you need a RICA serial number, a current active number for confirmation, and a waiting period of 24 to 48 hours depending on request timing. For contract users, Cell C tells you to settle the contract and then switch. Cell C keep your number
Telkom is less explicit on a public porting how-to page than some rivals, but it does give you the right support channels. Its mobile service number is 081180, and its customer-care page points contract and mobile users to its mobile help and cancellation support. If you are moving a Telkom number out, assume the same rule applies: keep the line active, start the port with the new network, then close the old account only after the move is complete. Rain is the most explicit about the traps. It says you can port an active South African mobile number to rain, but you should keep the existing service active until the port is complete. It also warns that donor-network services may disappear, that liability on the old contract may remain, and that you can lose the number if you cancel rainone without porting it out first. That is the same warning in different clothing: the number is safest while it still belongs to an active network service. rain FAQs rain number portability terms
The rule that saves people from themselves
Port first. Cancel after.
If you remember only one sentence, make it that one. The moment you cancel or let the old service lapse, you have changed the status of the number from active to recoverable. Recovery is not something you should bet your WhatsApp history, banking OTPs, or business contacts on. ICASA’s own consumer material on number portability frames the service as the ability to keep your number while moving providers, not after you have already abandoned the number. A simple checklist before you press send
Check that your old number is still active. Check that the new SIM is RICA registered. Check that the name and ID number match on both sides. Check that your contract balance, device subsidy, or notice period is sorted if you are leaving a contract. Check that you still have the old SIM available to answer the confirmation message. Check the porting format and destination number for the network you are joining.
Do those six things and most of the drama disappears.
Realistic time and effort
The technical transfer is usually a one-day to two-day job, with many operator pages pointing to a 24 to 48 hour window. Vodacom’s published process narrows the actual processing window to weekday evenings, and ICASA allows up to seven working days for an approved port. The consumer effort is low if your details already match and higher if you are on contract, because contract users still have to cancel the old agreement, settle any remaining amount, and return any leased device if the provider asks for it. In practice, the switch is usually a few SMS messages and a bit of paperwork. The part that causes trouble is not the port. It is the cleanup after it.
